Hi guys,
I sent this in a PM to each of you, but I thought it would be useful posted here as a sticky. Also, I thought you guys could add your thoughts or other things to watch for, from your experience, if you wanted.
I would prefer that we moderators be relatively light-handed ... but the main things I'd like to monitor are these:
1. Spam. Obviously. But there are also times, as you know, when people try to put a lot of their blog posts on forums. I would prefer that we keep that to a minimum. If someone is a regular member and they post a link to their blog post that's related to the discussion, that's fine, but if it's obviously someone who just signed up and starts posting their links, delete the post and send them a note. If they continue, then we need to ban them.
2. Personal attacks. I encourage debate, but I don't want things to get too vicious or resort to name calling. Just break up any fights you see, and feel free to delete messages. Especially if they're libelous.
3. Porn, etc. I'd like this to be family friendly, especially as my 14-yr-old daughter might be checking the forum. :)
Other than that, just encourage people to keep things friendly and positive, and do so yourself.
Feel free to add thoughts, comments, other suggestions, etc. Thanks guys!

agreed wrt using a light hand. It seems the majority of our members will be rational and polite (ie: grownups who don't need a babysitter).
What are your thoughts concerning foul language? are certain words filtered by the software?

Another question, what about signatures? Can users promote a website in their sig? For example, I run a contest newsletter, can I put "Click here if you are interested in contests" in my sig?
And if that's not allowed, what about blogs?
Thanks

What do you guys think about these issues?
Personally, foul language doesn't bother me, but I'm open to suggestions here.
And as for signatures, it doesn't bother me if there's a link or two. 10 links might be overkill. I just have a problem with people just coming onto the forum to post their blog links and then leave.
But I'd like to hear other thoughts from you guys.

Don't know of foul language , should certainly be kept to a minimum though.
About the signature, 2 links seem to be the maximum. And a maximum of 4 lines. Don't think this will ever really be a problem though.

At previous message boards I have been a part of there were always some type of restrictions on signatures. However, it was mostly because people were putting huge images in. I don't think I've seen anybody with an image in their signature yet and I certainly don't have a problem with self-promotion in a signature (maybe because I already have my blog link in mine :D )
