OK, I realized that the spambots were getting out of hand ... for one day, I switched the registration confirmation to be approved by me, and it was so overwhelming that I decided I needed to take action. So thanks to links from some of you, I've installed three mods:
1) There's a new question in the registration form, which I plan to change periodically to keep ahead of the spambots. Right now, the question is, "What is the background color of the Zen Habits blog?" I'm hoping the obvious answer is white, but if not, I'll find an easier question. This should prevent most spambots from getting through.
2) In addition, if the spambot tries to provide profile info during the registration process, they will be flagged as spam and prevented from registering.
3) I've blocked guests from viewing the memberlist as well as user profiles. This is designed to remove the incentive for human spammers to register ... they are trying to get the search engines like google to see the link to their site from the forum profile and memberlist, but now the search engines won't be able to access those pages.
Also, the regular capcha for phpBB is activated.
I also removed the subsilver theme (as sid noticed!) because I was installing a bunch of mods and it's too hard to do it for multiple themes ... so, for now, people are stuck with the default theme. Hope that's not too much of a problem.
Lastly, I will make an announcement in the announcements forum, but I've assigned ranks to different numbers of posts ... most people right now are "New Zen Habitants" :)
Let me know what you guys think of these changes, and if you have other suggestions/comments. I hope this will reduce the amount of spam by a dramatic amount. Also, I will be deleting the spam accounts that are there right now -- which is a little disappointing, as we had passed 300 members! :)

Great; only I think the question for the BG Color will cause way too much confusion. "A question like how much is 1+1" or "Are you human?" is more than enough to confuse a bot normally.
This question can also confuse humans.
I'm not sure what you mean with the second one though "2) In addition, if the spambot tries to provide profile info during the registration process, they will be flagged as spam and prevented from registering. " ?
P.S. Sorry that I've been a bit inactive on the forum, I'm leaving on a 1-or-2-week-holiday tomorrow and as a webdesigner that means that everyone still wants everything finished because I'll be unavailable for a while :)
Just so that you know :)

Yes, I miss my beloved SubSilver already
Would you also be able to link me with the forum mods you used Leo? I'd like to have a look into them!

Yeah, my apologies for lack of participation lately as well...I'm in the middle of a musical theatre production, and have very little time to myself. The show closes on Sunday (of course I go back to working 55 hrs/week on Friday  )
But yeah, when I'm not in the middle of a show, I'm a lot more active.... :D

Sorry, I've been away too guys! :)
Anyway, you're probably right about the difficulty of the question. Will change that one soon.
@Gerto: What I meant by #2 is that spambots try to put profile info such as website urls when they register ... I believe that's supposed to be done later, but the spambots do it anyway. This mod stops them and flags them as spam.
@sid: here are the links:
Mod requiring authorization code or answer to a question during registration:
http://www.marshalrusty.com/phpBB/rac.mod
Mod preventing guests from seeing profiles or member list:
http://www.phpbb.com/community/viewtopic.php?t=213812
I didn't bookmark the others, but here's where I got everything from:
http://www.phpbb.com/community/viewtopic.php?t=427852
Thanks guys!

Is there a hack you can install that will prevent new members from posting URLs until they have a minimum (say 10) number of posts? I caught myself responding to a couple of posts that I'm fairly certain were spam. But I gave them the benefit of the doubt, cuz the discussion was worthwhile (IMHO)...

I was thinking that myself the other day Randy, I think it was the user 'quitsmoker' had a link to his quit smoking blog in his first post. Felt more like advertising than discussion.

Randy, that would be a great one ... I'll do a little looking around, but if anyone else runs across a mod like that, please let me know!

I know we had it at VeggieBoards off and on over the years, but I also think it might have been buggy, cuz it never quite worked... Also, it could be a problem with people who legitimately want to link to their blogs or to a legit self-improvement site
