Resume daily exercise routine

During October, I'll exercise every day.

For several years, I've done some form of exercise (even if it's just a little yoga in the morning) daily. I lived across the street from my gym, which made it easy (easier, anyway).

Now, I've moved. My gym is across town, and my house is a mess of boxes and packing material. Getting back to my regular routine will probably help me to feel more balanced in this new place, not to mention improve my health :-)

My advice, based on trying to make this a habit myself recently:

Only do a very small amount of exercise each day. Don't try to resume your old workout, as it will be difficult and you will have a hard time forming the habit, and you are more likely to fail. Even 5-10 minutes is good for now, as you should focus on building the habit and not on how much exercise you're doing. After you do that for a month, you can increase the length or intensity, gradually.

Do it at the same time and place each day. Make it an appointment. Have a trigger for the habit (such as when you get off work), so you never forget. :)

Good so far. Yesterday was just a yoga day; today should have been a running/lifting day, but all the walking I've been doing has brought my plantar fasciitis back with a vengeance. So - I biked for half an hour, lifted (my abbreviated routine only takes about 15 minutes), and finished on the elliptical for 15 minutes. I also got my short yoga practice in this morning.

Tomorrow should be my first time swimming at the new gym. Now, I just need to find my goggles amidst all my half-unpacked stuff...

Leo: I perhaps made it sound as though I haven't been exercising at all. I have, but just need a little extra shove to get back up to my full routine. (Which, until I moved last month, was: 15 minutes of yoga most days; running 2-3 miles twice a week; swimming for 30 min. or so twice a week; biking to and from work for a round-trip total of 9.5 or so miles daily, plus biking for most errands, for a weekly biking total of around 55 miles.)

I made it a goal to at least go for a half hour walk 5 days a week. It shouldn't be too hard. During the work week, I take public transportation and often work far distances to see my clients (I'm a social worker).

I think I'm on a roll :D

Yoga this morning (the daily routine there is *really* helping with my feet), and went for a swim in the afternoon. The new pool is nice - I'm looking forward to doing more swimming there. I really noticed the effects of de-training with my swimming, far more than with biking (possibly because I haven't been a swimmer for all that long - I just started at the beginning of the summer).

Tomorrow - more yoga (of course) and also running if my feet feel up to it, or biking if they don't. I'm also going to try the group strength-training class at my gym. I did "BodyPump" as one of my two lifting workouts at my old gym; not sure how this new class will compare...

Leo: Thanks for providing this forum and the monthly challenges! It's a funny thing about how our minds work, but this low-stress form of accountability was exactly what I needed!

Perhaps I need to make actually posting here about what I'm up to another habit ;-)

Last week continued to be a good start for the month of getting back into my exercise routine. I didn't make it to the gym in time for the strength-training class (I'll give it another go tomorrow), but I otherwise made it to everything else I planned on, exercise-wise. And I lifted, just didn't take the class.

Today - good so far - I did my yoga (after a week of consistent practice, I feel noticeably taller and my feet feel great). Today is my first day of dissertation work in the new house, so I'll be heading out to the gym in the afternoon after I've gotten a few things done with that.
