So my bf has ADD. He was diagnosed as a kid. We are both on a big natural kick so we don't want to do the whole RX thing. Anyone know of any good natural things to help? He has a huge problem focusing on college atm.

Hey zionokc,

I registered just to give you a bit of a hint. I have ADD, and just got through university this year. I found the only natural thing that helped me was the fish oil capsules, you can buy them from the pharmacy. I took 2 a day for the 5 year course I was doing, cost me around $200 overall for the 5 years, but geez I'll let you know it was definitely worth it! I've now got a Bachelor of Electrical Engineering, and have noticed the ADD has settled down even without taking fish oil tablets, it's great!

The fish oil tablets will look like a children's packet, but they're good for everyone to take!

I hope I've helped, as this very technique got me my degree (when before I would barely be able to sit through any of the lectures!)

The fish oil for concentration is a new one. Can't see where it would hurt though as fish oil is beneficial in several other ways.

As someone who has the attention span of a three-year-old, I can only offer what has worked for me...and it's an ongoing challenge:

1) Meditation: Meditation is not about sitting in the lotus position and chanting over a set of prayer beads. Meditation is about sustained concentration. There are a ton of resources out there that may offer your boyfriend a starting point. I profiled one such meditation coach here: Going Within: Steve Ilg on Sustained Concentration.

2) Search Leo's blog for tips on time management. He offers some great advice that can help your BF better manage/organize his day. If your boyfriend can keep his focus together for 10 minutes, then he can develop a system that will help him with college.

3) I'm a returning college student and sitting through a three-hour lecture (with no break) can be a challenge. To keep me from nodding off, I do various mental games during class that allow me to still pay attention to the professor but stay alert and focused at the same time. One of those is to change my posture every five minutes. First, it's sitting with a very straight back, feet on the floor. That's tough to do at the end of the day! Then, for the next five minutes, I'll slouch or cross my feet. And I'll repeat throughout the lecture. I get to improve my posture and stay focused at the same time!

I did not know about the fish oil bit. Is there anything similar for vegetarians.?

The postures exercises is also interesting. Another exercise be trying to see a mantra in different colors while chanting it. If you chant "so ham" in ten different colors as you repeat it, that keeps you focussed.

+2 for fish oil as it is divided up into the Omega 3 essential fatty acids of EPA and DHA. EPA is the anti-inflammatory part and DHA improve brain function! The brain is like 65% fat! (mostly DHA also) So stands to reason...more fat that is healthy in the brain...the better it works. There was a article a while back (I dont know where I read it) that associated the paleolithic caveman and his increase of mental ability to the period where he hunted more wild game and yes, they ate everything including the brains of the animals (brain=fat=dha=improved cognitive ability)

That and get rid of sugar and drink water....sugar "shorts out" the cellular communications in the brain....hence all these kids running around with some sort of mental disorder or seizures when it has been shown that when you reduce the sugar and increase the fat in their diet.....whoolaa...symptoms decrease if not disappear.

Last would be my rant on Alzheimers and the association to Statin Medicine intake....but that's for another day. :D

Lack of Essential Fatty Acids in the diet is one of the major reasons behind ADD. Fish oil and Flax are good choices for getting essential fatty acids.

Even if I don't have any health problems, I prefer to take Fish oil on a regular basis as they are essential part of a health insurance against many chronic diseases.

My choice is Norwegian fish oil that has been tested by third parties to be free from PCBs, mercury etc.

Regards,

Add another vote for fish oil. Also, getting out in nature has proven to work wonders for people suffering from ADD. Check out the book "Last Child in the Woods" by Richard Louv.
