One problem I have is the inability to focus on the now, the immediate moment when engaged in a task that doesn't require much concentration. A storm of secondary thoughts rolls out of the back of my mind and fights for center stage: work, relationships, lists I should write, arguments I should have won, a new approach to a software problem I should try....
I did two little things to affect this recently. The first was to slow down and focus more at the gym. I think this was prompted by one of Leo's old posts that mentioned that "fewer slower" was better than "more faster". It also helped me with focus and concentration. This really felt nice; instead of feeling like I was fighting with the weight, it felt more cooperative. And much better for general form and balance.
The second thing only makes sense if you've watched "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy". The hosts of that show had a phrase, "straight guy speed shaving", which is bad habit that is deeply ingrained in me. I'll zone out in the morning and drag my razor over my face as fast as possible, while reviewing the day's work agenda in my head. And frequently cut myself, which happened on the TV show a few times also. Not doing this is a really good idea. Slowing down, experiencing the illusion of my reflection encroaching on my personal space, and thoroughly observing the action take place just feels better. Hard to tell if it really feels actually good, or if all the benefit is just in squelching one more opportunity for my subconscious to demand attention. The only distracting thought in my head while shaving today was this post.
Obviously these are baby-steps, only of use for the hardcore neophytes among us. The old masters are now scoffing at the young grasshopper.

I'm glad to see I'm not the only person affected by speed shaving. I can't tell you how many times I cut my face because I was shaving too fast. The marketing company I work for is doing a cool promotion for Schick's new titanium trimmer. I got to try it and it's great. You can get a free one just by registering at http://www.trimflixx.com/. You can make a funny video of you having a pillow fight with two lovely ladies in the process. This should help with the inevitable injuries that come from speed shaving. If not, at least the price is right ;)
