Huh. I never would have thought to compile a list like this. That's actually pretty helpful, Peter.
The one flaw is that people sometimes join in as late as the 10th. I'm planning on locking the 'post your goal here' thread on the 5th, to help remedy this, but until then, you might have to add entries as the late-showers arrive.

Thanks Fekket, I will update as we go along. Perhaps at the end we can highlight those that have completed their challenge. I have to say it's been really interesting typing these up and seeing what people set as goals and how they formulate it.
Anybody want to add some flavour to their challenge ?
(somewhere along the lines of if I don't make it I will....gift/donate/send/undress and upload etc or If I do make it I will treat myself to a...etc)

Hey, good idea! I can't think of a good failure one (it'd only be something silly) but I will use a reward of some kind. I think I will reward myself with a new full-length mirror + lamp to help me get dressed in the morning - the mirror I use broke yesterday :( That way, I'll be able to see what the heck I'm doing with my hair etc a lot easier and that should save even more time alongside the early rising!
Now I should start setting the cash aside! >_> Ah, there's a good incentive - if I don't get up 30 days in a row at that time, I can donate the cash I've put aside to a charity I like instead of buying a mirror. Admittedly, I won't have put aside much as I am deeply in debt for surgery I had to have last year, and I'm paying off large chunks of that each fortnight, but hopefully I'll be able to put aside at least $AU60 by the end of the thirty days, which won't be enough for the mirror, but I can save the rest later. The point will be I'll know I'm allowed to buy one guilt-free!
Edit Feb 11th, 08:
I've changed my mind regarding my choices for reward and "the stick". I just can't afford to put aside any money right now, I'm still paying off so much debt from my surgery and I really can't use monetary rewards right now.
So instead, I think every day I get up early my reward is to do whatever the heck I want with that extra time, for now ;-)

And no, my mirror didn't break because of my scary face ;-) The hinges rotted and it fell off its stand... ^_^;

Thanks peterrh! This was great to read through. I do find it interesting to see at a glance what everyone's goals are. Sometime in the future I plan on working on getting up at the same time every day, but it will be a while before I can really attempt that. For now, my schedule is so crazy that some days I'm waking up at 4am, and other days I don't have to be up until 8am. I'm not ready yet to set a goal of waking up any earlier than I need to since those 8 am days are usually desperately needed. :)

@ Sass: I'm sure you can find yourself with a mirror after the month is over, just set the intention, both for your challenge& your mirror:)
I wonder if there's any millionaires that have digital mirrors reflecting back the nonmirrored you (where left and right are not reversed).
hmm

Watching the goal in the list reinforces my goal. Thank you.
This morning i coul not eat veggies because I had my breakfast at my job's cafeteria.
I need to wake up earlier in order to prepare my own breakfast and add veggies to it.
It's funny to see that some people try to make things that are natural to others.
As John Lennon said:"There's nothing you can do that can't be done"
Push hard!

FekketCantenel, with respect, why does the list have to be locked on the fifth? What's wrong with signing up on the tenth? That's still enough time to build a new habit, at least according to the old rule of thumb that it takes three weeks.
As for me, I didn't make it to the forums until today owing to travel and illness. My goal for this month is to wake up at 4.30 every morning and write 500 words.

Hi Everybody!
I put in a Tupperware some frozen veggies and take them with me. I ate them at the cafeteria with my other breakfast.
I figure out that in this way I could change my nutritional habits. But as Leo say a little thing first.
I encourage you to reach your goal today!

Two reasons for locking on the 5th, as opposed to the 8th (which would leave 21 days in the month of February, it being a leap year): I wanted to allow the latest joiners a day or two of margin between challenges, and I was experimenting to see how many people sign up on days 6 through 8 (in other words, how many missed out this month). So far, other than your post, I haven't seen any complaints. Hopefully, those who missed out will be patient enough to wait and prepare for next month.
In March, I think I'll lock it when there are 22 days remaining (one extra for a margin day).
Sorry to hear about your illness, anseris (I typed that as 'answerist' the first time). Good luck on your February Challenge.

FekketCantenel, I still don't see why the sign-up thread has to be locked at all. What about those who stumble upon this forum for the first time on the twentieth? (Of any month - I'm not just talking about February.) Who wants to wait ten days to start changing their life? How do late sign-ups adversely affect the rest of us?

Because the thread is for the current month's challenge. If you sign up to get a ten-day head-start, that sort of defeats the purpose of it being a 'monthly' challenge, and makes it just an 'any time you like' challenge. Besides, I thought part of the idea of the Challenges was to be part of a larger group.
If there's going to be so much whining about it, then fine, I won't lock the topics anymore. I'll even go unlock this month's one. That's what I get for trying to be a moderator.

Fekket,
I actually posted a thread in the Admin forum about this very topic, but I'm guessing you haven't seen it. I'm going to have to agree with people who are wondering why the thread has to be locked in the first place. I don't really see our job as moderators to be restricting when and where a user can post. I understand where you're coming from, as I often wonder why people even bother joining a monthly challenge so late. However, while you and I may not agree with them jumping in late, that is their choice to make-- not ours. All in all, though, I don't think it's that big of a deal either way.
Just two cents from another moderator.

I am in agreement with Fekket that it is meaningful to lock the thread after five days or so has passed since the beginning of the month, and keeping this a monthly challenge. There is something about deadlines and specific time periods that make it both more attractive and easier to set and keep goals than open-ended challenges. I think that is one of the great appeals of the monthly challenges, and why they are starting to attract so many people. Those who come in mid-month can certainly set their own goals and go ahead and post their results on the daily threads without being part of the official monthly challenge list. So Fekket, I think your initial instincts were right, and I hope Leo and the moderators will consider retaining the thread lock as something that does contribute from a psychological standpoint to the success of the project.

I couldn't agree more. I looked forward to starting for the first time this month, and though I almost missed starting! (Had I actually missed, I would have simply added it to my calendar so I'd be sure to remember next time.) I believe the waiting time was extremely helpful in getting me mentally prepared and building up the will to follow through. I've noticed the same thing in other people, in many aspects of life. This leads me to believe that keeping the availability limited makes the 'item' more valuable.
Not only that, the motivation very-much does come from the whole 'group effort' thing. Camaraderie and all that. And it's already a sizable group. It's nice for those of us who made sure to be here, that we can build that camaraderie without constant inundation of new faces to adjust to.
Please lock it. And not just x days before the end of the month... but x days INTO the month. Afterall, it's not a "21 days" habit, it's a "calendar-month" habit. Personally, I'd take it from 5 days down to 3! Three easily accounts for months that start on weekends, etc. But 5 is still reasonable. However, 10 days... 1/3 of the month!... is not reasonable IMHO, but this is not my site, nor am I a moderator here. So I respect whatever decision is made.
The spirit of the challenges dictate that you can't start any ol' time. (It's to establish a habit within the calendar month, and you need *at least* 21 days to do that!) Closing the topics is completely relevant and necessary to accomplish the goal of the whole Monthly Challenge. And if we're not looking to accomplish that... why are we here???
So Fekket, please don't be bullied into changing (or lash out... not very zen) because of some people complaining. People will always complain. In this case, it is their own expectations that are unreasonable and completely out of line with the original intent of the Monthly Challenge.
And to Spurlis... with all due respect (and I mean that!)... please keep Admin conversations in the Admin forum and don't bicker about it for everyone else to see. It's also not very zen, and quite a turn-off to the whole forum.
Thanks for any consideration you see fit to give my views :)
