I was obese most of my life, until I did what every doctor has been saying for years: eat less and exercise more.
I don't want to be too self-promotional, but I posted a story on my blog on how I lost 105 lbs. with diet and exercise.
So if you don't want to read the article, here's a summary:
It took about 4 years: (about 1 year of losing, mixed with 3 years of maintenance), with no drugs or exercising machines. Just watching what I ate, and exercising (minimally).
Dropped from an unhealthy obese 270 lbs to 165 lbs., though I was underweight and, risking anemia, I'm purposely back up to 180 lbs.
The most sustained weight loss was when I followed the Hacker's Diet, using my own spreadsheets, weighing myself daily. My diet consisted of two totally greasy and unhealthy meals a day: toast, coffee, eggs for breakfast, fish n' chips for lunch.
My biggest strength was seeing the numbers in the spreadsheet as they went down and down, and being able to know exactly how many calories I was eating, and making sure it was a little less than I needed.
Armed with that knowledge, I know my own limits, and have been able to maintain whatever weight I want ever since.
I highly recommend reading The Hacker's Diet, it changed my life on how I see food and weight control. (It's not a this is what to eat book, it's a, this is how eating less and exercising more works, and how to overcome the psychological problems with math).

Wow, that's inspiring. Thanks for posting, I've decided to lose a bit of fat myself, and hearing others' success stories certainly doesn't ruin my motivation.
