Hi,
I am looking for an efficient way to organize bookmarks so that I can always access them on different browsers (safari and firefox), as well as on different computers (home and office). I use folders to organize my bookmarks by topic (and I like this method), but I'd like to avoid repeating what I do on one computer or browser. I've also used del.ici.ous, but I've used this site more like a scrap book.
Here is what I'm considering -- I'm interested in others experiences with these methods or other methods:
1) wikis -- google or another free wiki service
2) google notebooks
3) plain old html website
Please help. I want something that will work, and I'm not opposed to spending some time at the front end to get this set up. I just want it to be workable in the long run as I need these sites at my finger tips!
Thanks,
Julie

I keep my most visited links on an email in gmail... but I'm assuming you have more than that. You could have an email for each topic/category though, and then label them as link emails to access them quickly and easily through gmail. That's just my initial thought on the idea.

I don't know if you're on a Mac or on Windows. On my Mac I have a nice working combination of del.icio.us and Quicksilver. I bookmark all webpages in del.icio.us with the right tags.
Then I use the Social Bookmarks plugin in Quicksilver so it recognizes all my del.icio.us bookmarks. After invoking Quicksilver I just type the first few letters of the website or cathegory and I have the bookmarks right there at my fingertips. Works like a breeze!

I have started using del.icio.us with Firefox (with the bookmark on the fly toolbar buttons) and it is fantastic! I tag all my links with several categories, and I can even bundle those categories into larger subjects if I wish (like "Neil Gaiman" "Authors" "writingtips" "books" all bundled under the "writing" collection.
I also use Foxmarks to synchronise my Firefox bookmarks across all browsers. It is hands down my favourite Firefox extension. http://www.foxmarks.com/
It's a powerful combination of tools!

I've got my own website, on the free space I get with my ISP. So, once a week or so, I export my bookmarks, which are categorised into folders, to an HTML page. Then I FTP that onto my web space. I've got the URL of that page in my Google bookmarks on my iGoogle page. Even if I couldn't access my iGoogle page for some reason, I can always just type in the URL of my bookmarks page.
I like this because it takes minimum effort to keep them updated. There's no duplication of effort (i.e., I don't have to add things twice.) I like that they are arranged in the same way as on my browser at home, so are easy to find. And it's an offsite backup. And it doesn't leave me reliant on an online only list of bookmarks. Works for me.
Oh and the Google bookmarks, I keep only a short, uncategorised list there, just my top few sites, excluding ones there's already links to right there on the iGoogle page, like my Gmail etc.

Try Google Browser Sync. It synchronizes not only your bookmarks, but your open tabs as well. I'm not sure about safari support (does it support plugins?).

I use Google Bookmarks (from the google toolbar).
Not sure if the toolbar is for safari too, but in IE and Firefox it's the best solution for me.

I was researching this recently then I had an idea, I deleted all my bookmarks.
Now I don't need to worry about syncing, backing up and tidying bookmarks.
If there is anything that I really need again I'm sure Google will find it.

Wow tonyedgecombe, you're really trusting Google that much? You might be right about the fact that Google might find it, but will you remember the right keywords? If I want to look at a site a visited a few months ago I probably won't rememeber the name of it and it will take a lot of thinking about what the site was exactly about to be able to find some keywords to type into Google and then filter the results.

Well when I need something it shouldn't be hard to come up with the keywords.

I use del.icio.us as well with great firefox extension...so when I press "ctrl+d" it goes to del.icio.us instead of my local bookmarks and 'ctrl+b" shows del.icio.us bookmarks list as well, not local one.
You can set if you want bookmark to be private or shared on del.icio.us and you can access it from any place using any browser :)
This is definately better than wiki, google notebooks or plain html. Of course it doesn't have to be del.icio.us - you can choose one of similar services on-line :)
