I raised the avatar size restrictions to 120x120 pixels and 49 KB. EDIT: Okay, 49 KB was too much, so I set it down to 20 KB. Let me know if you enjoy the loosened restrictions, or if you think they should be returned to the old numbers (80x80 pixels and 6 KB).
Also, in order to create an avatar like the ones I always use, you can try Yahoo! Avatars. One IRC friend of mine thinks they're too fugly, though.

Actually, I highly enjoy them. I've been on several forums that use the same phpBB format and administrators there have set the size limit to to 60k - which more than plenty of room. So far it permits better resolution for the photos the members use and as long as you have the width & height restrictions, theres hardly any problem with avatars.
I wonder if you can set the size limit to 40k or something?
I'd love to use a picture like this one:
(31k already!)
I'd like to have the looser restrictions. And if by any rare chance, the efficiency issues do present themselves, we can always adjust it by a couple clicks of a button.

That one is probably so large because it's in PNG. Photoshop doesn't handle PNG well (you can use PNGCrush on it, but that's a lot of trouble just for one avatar). Try GIF or even JPG instead.
One reason I want to keep it low is because I know what it's like to be on slow, restrictively-capped internet. If everyone on this forum had a 60 kB avatar, each topic page (of uncached avatars) would be .5-1 MB. Yeah, sounds lame, but it adds up. See also: MySpace.

You're right on this aspect: PNG is much larger than JPG. But for those of us who don't have photoshop or any quality picture editing programs aside from the ones given as a default by our comp. systems, it's difficult to alternate the resolution of the JPG. So you're basically stuck with the lowest one of it. And GIF on Paint ruins the entire photo.
Nah, I was thinking more around 35k. :P
Although the limit on the other forums was 60k, barely anybody had an avatar that large. People had a variety of sizes ranging from 5k - 32k. Having more range gives others more options, but at the same time, it doesn't promise that everyone would arrange their photos to meet the end limits.
Just some thoughts. :)

Okay, okay, I raised it to 40 kB. Seems like a healthy margin, and most people probably won't even need that much.

Where did you get the winged one and the blue one you're currently using?
